The University of Kent is one of the most highly-regarded universities in the UK for Actuarial Science. Our actuarial programmes have been running for over 25 years and are accredited by the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries.
No other university covers more actuarial subjects or offers more potential exemptions than we do, so you can be confident that the University of Kent is the right place for you to begin your actuarial journey.
Degrees taught by qualified Actuaries: We have qualified staff actuaries who provide world-class teaching in Actuarial Science. All of our lecturers are experts in their own fields and have many years of professional experience within the actuarial profession. This means they are able to teach the practical applications of actuarial science, as well as the technical material required for the exams.
Excellent Teaching: Kent was awarded gold, the highest rating, in the UK Government’s Teaching Excellence Framework. The University of Kent’s Statement of Findings can be found at www.kent.ac.uk/tef-statement

Actuarial Year in Industry
Our Actuarial Science with a Year in Industry/Industrial Placement programmes allow you to put into practice the technical skills learnt at university and gain valuable transferable skills such as team working, problem-solving and communication, whilst earning a salary.
An actuarial placement may also count towards the work experience required for the actuarial profession qualifications. Contact us for more information about our placement programmes.
“The placement Year programme was incredibly useful for me, both in securing a graduate job and giving me a direction and focus going into my final year that I would otherwise have struggled with.
Given that there are no extra entry requirements and it’s easy to switch from the ‘with a Year in Industry’ to a regular degree, I’d encourage all future students to begin on the Year in Industry course to get the full benefit of the talks and sessions early on.”
– Jacob Booth, BSc Actuarial Science with a Year in Industry
UK Actuarial Profession accreditation
The UK Actuarial Profession is governed by the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA). We work very closely with the IFoA and industry practitioners to ensure that our programmes remain up-to-date and reflect the latest actuarial research and practices.
The IFoA has granted Kent full accreditation for all of its programmes, so there is the opportunity to gain exemptions from most of the UK professional actuarial exams.
We recognise that finding a suitable actuarial job is one of the most important objectives for students and we provide extensive careers support to all of our Actuarial Science students. This includes:
- A dedicated module to help students to develop employability skills such as CV writing, presentation skills, interview skills and preparing for assessment centres
- Actuarial careers events with external speakers from the actuarial profession
- A range of other initiatives to help our students improve their work-based skills, knowledge and experience
We have close links with UK actuarial employers and organise regular visits presentations from leading actuaries working in the profession.
“The Master’s in Applied Actuarial Science has helped me to take a step back from the technical detail to focus on the broader principles that are involved in the work that actuaries do. In addition, I’ve benefited from the views of the lecturers who have years of experience working in industry which I feel has enhanced my commercial awareness.”
– Claire Griffin, MSc Applied Actuarial Science
Introduction to PROPHET
Kent has an arrangement with FIS Global, who market the industry’s leading actuarial software package PROPHET. As a result, students on all of our actuarial science courses have the opportunity to get practical experience of using PROPHET, which is used by commercial companies worldwide for profit testing, valuation and model office work. In addition, the PROPHET module marks also count towards the degree award.
Award-winning academic building
In March 2017, the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Actuarial Science (SMSAS) moved into the multi-award-winning Sibson Building.
The building houses both SMSAS and Kent Business School (KBS) to create a vibrant new campus destination, bringing together academics, students, researchers and administrative staff from the two schools.
The unique ‘W’ shape building includes state-of-the-art equipment, social and study spaces for students and staff, IT suites and terminal rooms, three lecture theatres, seminar rooms, and a dedicated café.
Sibson was announced as a winner of a National Award from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) in June 2018, after being awarded the ‘RIBA South East Award 2018’ and ‘RIBA South East Building of the Year 2018’.
Beautiful green campus
Our campus is set in a stunning location.
It has plenty of green and tranquil spaces, both lawns and wooded areas, and is set on a hill with a view of the city and Canterbury Cathedral.
Kent has a reputation for being a very friendly university and everything you need on campus is within a ten minute walk. The campus has its own cinema, theatre, concert hall, and even a student nightclub. There are many restaurants, cafes and bars on campus and a sports centre and gym. Other facilities include a general store, a bookshop, a bank, a medical centre and a pharmacy.
