    The BSc Actuarial Science Programme

The BSc Actuarial Science programme at the LSE has a heavy mathematical and statistical component. Furthermore, students can specialise in data driven methods by choosing data science courses and focus on developing additional computing skills. All courses are taught by world leading experts in their fields and the programme is fully accredited by the Insti-tute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA). In particular, students may be granted exemptions for the IFoA subjects CS1, CS2, CM1, CM2, CB1 and CB2. The programme is also accredited by the Royal Statistical Society, providing graduates with the status of Graduate Statistician, a grade of professional membership of the society.

Additionally, many students arrange internships in actuarial and financial firms or placement companies with help from LSE Careers or the Department of Statistics. Therefore, students will graduate not only with technical skills but with relevant work experience too, putting them one step ahead of other graduates.

Also, each year, we organise the Department of Statistics Practitioners’ Challenge for BSc and MSc students. During this event, we collaborate with leading industry partners to initiate competitive projects focusing on real issues faced by companies. Students who take on the challenge use their personal and professional skills developed through their programme at LSE.

Finally, what is unique about our programme is that research projects are carried out in collaboration with two 3rd year undergraduate students each year. The research papers that were produced in previous years were presented in international conferences on computational and methodological Statistics and appeared in the internationally recognised actuarial journals.

Recent graduates from the programme have gone on to work in the areas of insurance (life and general), as well as investment banking, retail and commercial banking, accounting, finance and statistics.
