The Role:

Our actuarial and benefits practice is at the core of Hymans Robertson’s services. Over a million members of UK occupational pension schemes rely on us to report the financial security of their scheme, with over 200 employers and/or their trustees looking to us for advice on how to achieve this at an acceptable cost.

We are looking to recruit an Actuarial Analyst to join our Specialist Team. The team is responsible for completing all technical tasks while driving efficiency and is key to the long-term growth of our firm.

We are looking for a diligent individual with excellent problem-solving skills, a curious mind and great attention to detail. You will be responsible for carrying out complex technical work and contributing to improving the efficiency of our processes. The role will be working with our client facing teams as well as other parts of the firm and will therefore require excellent communication skills and the ability to work to multiple deadlines.

This role will bring many opportunities to develop your career. As well as being able to develop into a checking role there will also be potential future opportunities to own and run strands of work within the team, take on people management responsibilities, become a technical systems expert and contribute to team learning and development.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Perform all necessary data processing, including validation and manipulation at a scheme level. This will involve occasional coding work using our in-house data manipulation system.
  • Calculate and check individual member liabilities.
  • Review scheme information, i.e. benefit summaries, benefit changes and discuss anomalies with client teams.
  • Use firm’s bespoke valuation systems to perform actuarial valuations. Perform individual and scheme level checks on the output.
  • Work with the other members of the Specialist Team and people across the wider Firm on ad-hoc projects to improve efficiency and develop processes.
  • Carry out self checks on all of your work.
  • Take responsibility for maintaining knowledge on relevant industry changes which impact on day to day work.
  • Flexibility to travel to other Hymans Robertson offices on an occasional basis.
  • Adherence to the firm’s Information Security standards, policies and procedures.

Skills and Qualifications:

Essential qualifications

  • Educated to at least a Scottish Higher Grade  / A level or equivalent in Mathematics

Welcomed but not essential experience

  • A degree in a numerate subject
  • Experience of Microsoft Excel
  • An understanding of the legislative framework and structure of defined benefit pension schemes
  • Programming skills
