- Name: Kirstin West
- Job Title: Actuarial Consultant
- Company: Broadstone
- Fields of Work: Pensions
- University: Strathclyde
- Degree: Bachelors in Mathematics and Statistics
I joined Broadstone in early 2024 after completing my degree in Mathematics and Statistics. Currently, I work as an Actuarial Consultant within the pensions team at our Glasgow office.
My interest in the actuarial profession was sparked by my desire to apply my mathematical knowledge in practical scenarios. The client-facing aspect of the role further appealed to me, as I have always enjoyed engaging with the individuals for whom I am working.
A notable advantage of this industry is the supportive community and the numerous opportunities for social interaction outside the office. Many cities have their own actuarial student societies, providing a relaxed setting to connect with peers experiencing similar professional milestones. These societies offer a platform for sharing experiences, discussing challenges, and celebrating achievements, fostering a sense of camaraderie and mutual support.
Broadstone distinguished itself among various firms due to its alignment with my personal values and its dynamic growth, making it an ideal environment for career advancement. The company also provides excellent support and valuable resources, particularly in relation to exam preparation, and individual offices host various social events throughout the year – so it can be fun too!
Since joining, I have particularly enjoyed Broadstone’s graduate programme, which facilitates networking among new hires from different offices through soft-skills training days. These training days are designed to enhance our communication, teamwork, and leadership skills, which are essential for success in the actuarial profession. It’s also a great chance to make contacts with people in other parts of the business.
The comprehensive support system at Broadstone has been instrumental in my professional development, offering guidance and assistance to help me navigate the complexities of the actuarial exams and the demands of the profession.
In the pensions industry, my daily responsibilities are diverse, ensuring that my work remains engaging and stimulating. Tasks range from calculating the value of an individual’s pension benefits for transfer to another scheme, to valuing entire pension schemes to ensure adequate asset coverage for future benefits and preparing comprehensive reports on our calculations.
Additionally, I attend and participate in client meetings, which enhances my understanding of the work I am involved in. These meetings provide valuable insights into client needs and expectations, allowing me to tailor my approach and deliver more effective solutions.
The most rewarding aspect of my job is the variety of tasks and the significant level of responsibility I have been entrusted with, despite my junior status. I have relished the opportunity to contribute to important and high-level projects. Working on these projects has allowed me to develop a deeper understanding of the pensions industry and the actuarial profession and has provided me with the opportunity to make meaningful contributions to the firm’s success.
My advice to prospective candidates is to thoroughly research the industry and the role to ensure it aligns with your interests. It is crucial to be aware of the time commitment required for studying, as it can be challenging. Prior to interviews, I recommend researching the firm, its values, key business areas, and recent industry developments. This preparation will demonstrate your genuine interest in the firm and the career and provide you with topics to discuss or inquire about during the interview. Additionally, understanding the latest trends and news in the industry will help you stay informed and make a positive impression during your interview.
My journey so far at Broadstone has been incredibly rewarding, both professionally and personally. The combination of challenging work, supportive colleagues, and ample opportunities for growth has made it an ideal place to start my actuarial career. I look forward to continuing to develop my skills and contribute to the success of the firm in the years to come.
