My Career Path to Date

Why I chose a career in the actuarial profession

Before joining APR, I worked in mathematical research, where I enjoyed tackling abstract problems and exploring complex systems. However, I found myself wanting to apply those skills to more tangible challenges. The actuarial profession stood out as a great fit – it combined technical challenge with meaningful impact in industries that are constantly evolving. I was also drawn to the structure of the profession, where ongoing learning and professional development are built into the job.

Background and training

I joined APR in September 2023 through the graduate scheme. The initial training programme was fast-paced and wide-ranging, covering both technical skills and broader business context. This programme gave me a strong foundation to tackle a variety of problems with confidence when I started on my client projects. Since then, I’ve worked with large insurers and reinsurers, mainly in General Insurance Pricing, and have continued building my skills both on the job and through the actuarial exams.

Current role

My projects to date have involved working closely with pricing teams to analyse data, build models, and support decision-making. One of my favourite pieces of work was a deep dive into an insurer’s aviation portfolio, where I got the chance to explore the data in detail and provide insights that helped shape their pricing strategy. Alongside the more traditional use of Excel (which remains a key tool for many actuarial tasks), I have also had the opportunity to work with Python, particularly for developing new models from the ground up. This experience has allowed me to get involved in the more technical aspects of pricing and explore more efficient ways of handling data and building tools. I have found that clients are very open to new approaches, and I have been able to contribute ideas that helped improve existing processes.

I have really enjoyed the collaborative nature of the work. Some projects have involved working alongside other APR colleagues, which adds a great layer of peer support. I have also had the opportunity to connect with actuaries across different companies and specialisms, gaining insight into a range of approaches and working styles.

Future plans

Looking ahead, I’m still exploring where I want my actuarial career to take me. I’m keen to continue building experience across different areas – whether that’s reserving, capital modelling, or more strategic or regulatory roles. One of the things I really value about working at APR is the variety of projects, which gives me the flexibility to keep learning and refining my interests. Outside of work, I have a strong interest in wine, and in the longer term I’d love to explore how that might intersect with my career – perhaps through work in fine wine or vineyard insurance?!

Advice to others considering this career

Don’t worry if you don’t have everything figured out on day one. What matters most is a willingness to learn, a proactive mindset, and a curiosity about how things work. If you enjoy problem-solving and want a career that balances technical challenge with real-world impact, the actuarial profession is a great choice. APR in particular offers a great environment to explore your interests, thanks to the wide range of project work and strong support for development.

Getting involved in the social side of work has also been a big part of what’s helped me settle in. At APR, we have regular socials throughout the year, and they have made it really easy to build friendships and feel like part of the team – even when we’re working on different projects. There’s a real sense of community here that makes APR feel like one big family, and I’m not just saying that because I’m leading the social committee this year (though I’ll admit, I am slightly biased!). It’s been a lot of fun helping to organise events and seeing how much everyone enjoys coming together outside of work.
