- Name: Riya de Caires
- Job Title: Actuarial Analyst
- Company: Aon
- Fields of Work: Consultancy
- University: Bristol
- Degree: BSc Mathematics
During my second year of university, I participated in Aon’s Diversity in Data & Actuarial Insight Programme, where I learned more about the actuarial profession and was paired with a mentor who I met with regularly. This gave me an opportunity to connect with someone already working in the profession, learn more about the types of projects actuaries are involved in and how they make an impact. I began to understand how the theory I enjoyed at university could be applied in practice, and it gave me confidence and valuable experience to draw on when attending interviews for a graduate role.
I studied Mathematics at the University of Bristol with a focus on pure maths, and since graduating in 2025, have been working towards the professional qualifications as a Fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries – I am currently awaiting the results of my first two exams!
I’m fortunate to be fully supported by my employer throughout the qualification process. This includes dedicated study days, tutorials, and study materials, which makes it significantly easier to balance full time work with revision. It has also been encouraging to see that colleagues from a wide range of academic backgrounds, including those without a maths degree, are able to succeed in the exams.
I work as an Actuarial Analyst at Aon, and my day-to-day role involves tasks such as data validation, running calculations and preparing outputs that contribute to wider actuarial analyses. I also attend tutorial days, where I work in a group with peers from a range of companies exploring a variety of subjects, from statistics to economics.
Through my role, I have developed technical skills, such as a greater proficiency in Excel and other analytical tools, and soft skills like communication, problem solving and time management, particularly through attending Trustee meetings. Beyond the work itself, I’ve made great friends at Aon, and the supportive culture has made settling in a lot easier. I’ve also started attending a weekly pottery class with colleagues, which has been a fun way to get to know people outside of the office!
Looking ahead, my main goal is to complete the actuarial exams and qualify as an actuary. It’s a long-term commitment, and hard work, but I’m motivated by the range of opportunities that will come with being professionally qualified.
I also want to continue to develop in my role. I’m particularly interested in building a greater knowledge of and experience in data analysis, coding and modelling, and I’m thankful that my employer often gives colleagues the flexibility to spend time in different teams, such as the Data Solutions team, which I’m keen to explore alongside my actuarial work.
Connect with people already in the profession through internships, insight days, networking events or on LinkedIn.
Utilise platforms such as Bright Network, SEO London and Actuarial Careers as these helped me understand the range of opportunities available.
Take time to properly research the actuarial profession and make sure it genuinely interests you, as the qualification process is a significant commitment over several years. And building good study habits early on is valuable, as balancing work and exams can be demanding.
